Soap Making - Frequently Asked
Questions
Here's a few of the FAQ's we address in "Soap Making Made Simple!"
HARD SOAP OIL...
Question: Why does castile soap, or any soap with a high
percentage of olive oil, get so hard if you
keep it warm while setting? Normally, I do not insulate at all
if I want to be able to slice it nicely.
Answer: Soaps made with olive oil (or many other
oils) are typically much harder than other homemade soaps.
Therefore, you should always keep a careful eye on its progress
as it sets.
While we still recommend wrapping your soap as it sets, you
should be aware that olive oil soap would harden more quickly,
so it will need far less setting time than other types of
soap.
OBJECTS AND BUBBLES...
Question: If I put objects in the soap, will the bubbles
make everything rise to one specific area?
Answer: The best way to avoid the problem you are describing
is not to add objects to your soap! In all seriousness, though,
if you want to add objects to your soap, do it after the basic
soap has already set.
Then, heat the basic soap until it reaches
a pasty-thick consistency and add your shells, rocks, or
whatever object you have in mind.
HELP WITH OILS...
Question: I want to know if there are recipes that only
require two types of oil. For example, soybean oil and
olive oil, or, does it always have to be a four-part
breakdown to make soap? I am just experimenting in soap
making now and I want to learn fast!
